Kirklees Council voted on 16 January 2019 to declare a Climate Emergency after the largest four parties in the chamber had indicated they would support the motion, with the following actions required of the Council:
- Initiate a full Environmental Audit of the Council to measure its carbon footprint, identify hotspots and work towards being carbon neutral in line with the latest targets set and agreed by the UN Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
- Significantly improve our waste recycling rate to reach the target of 55% by 2025”.
- Identify practical measures to reduce emissions and the Council’s carbon footprint.
- Encourage action in the wider community, businesses and other key organisations.
