The HoTT Edible Group have enlisted the help of ABG Ltd of Meltham, a local manufacturer of environmentally sustainable recycled plastic planting systems, to support the creation of edible planting areas around the town and local villages, with the goal of replicating other similar community projects that have been established around the UK and other parts of the world. Several members of the Group visited Incredible Edible Todmorden, who started the Incredible Edible idea 10 years ago, and from where the idea has spread around the world. So we are keen to establish a similar project in Holmfirth for the community benefit.
Holmfirth, like Todmorden, is situated in a steep valley with many houses having small or no gardens at all, and little opportunity to be self sustainable in vegetables or fruit. The idea of Incredible Edibles is that the vegetables and fruit planted, can be harvested by anyone and are shared by the community.
In Todmorden a large number of the beds have been raised in wooden planters for ease of planting, weeding and harvesting. In Holmfirth we are following this idea by placing plastic planting systems in a graduated bank where space allows, to get the maximum plants in the space allocated.
The beds will be maintained by a group of enthusiastic volunteers and HoTT are always looking for more help with these projects from anyone with a few hours to spare each week. Notices will be placed in the vegetable and fruit beds instructing dates for harvesting and the best way of collecting the leaves or fruit.
The project has reached the stage where we have now identified several planting areas in and around Holmfirth and are keen to get planting. Watch out for our notices and green vegetables this summer.
If you would like to join HoTT on this project or have space you could allocate for planting, please get in touch, our contacts are detailed on the website.
